Book Summary

When former Richmond High School basketball legend Ken Carter agrees to take over his alma mater's floundering team, he has the players sign a contract the demands good grades, perfect class attendance, and suits on game day. With Coach Carter at the helm, the Oilers' record soon stands at 12 and 0. But when the coach learns that some members of his team are cutting class and failing academically, he locks them out of the gym, incurring the wrath of the players, the school, and the community. Coach Cater's determination to adhere to his conviction puts his philosophy and his players' trust to the ultimate test.

Lit Circle 1

We started out by reading the summary of chapters we read, then we discussed these thinking questions:
*What do you think was going through Carter's mind when Coach White asked him to take over his coaching job?
*Why do you think Carter took the coaching job?
*What do you think the St. Francis coach meant when he said the Richmond boys dont need practice...they need prison?
*What message was Carter sending to the team when he was standing up against Cruz?
*Why did Carter decide to coach the team?
*Do you think the contract was a good idea for the team, or will it become a problem later on in the book?
*Why did Carter decide to become the basketball coach?
*Do you think it was right that he made a contract?
*Why did Carter fight Cruz?

After the thinking question disscusion we went over some of the vocab in the chapters we read. We had these words picked out:
*squeak sound: a thin, high pitched cry or sound.
*frown: to wrinkle the brow.
*frustrated: to cause disagreement.
*practice: to work at something.
*sir: used as a form of polite address for a man.

The final thing we discussed was the passages from the chapters that we thought were good writing or significance to the book. They were:
*"On the court the impossibly tall Crane yo-yoed the ball toward an exhausted Richmond player named Junior Battle. Junior's uniform was old and worn, soaked with sweat, and provided a stark contrast to Ty Crane's crisp white St. Francis jersey."
*"In my hand, I hold a contract. Carter held up a stack of papers for everyone to see. If you sign this contract and honor your side of it, we are going to be successful."
*"Yo sir" Kenyon corrected himself, "How many we gonna do?" "Its up to you sir" Carter replied. "How many can you do in..." Carter checked his watch. "One hour and seven minutes."

Lit Circle 2

First we discussed these thinking questions of the entire group:

*"What would you choose if you had the choice to go to Richmond or go to St.Francis?"
*"What would you do if you had a scholarship and a baby on the way, what would u choose?"
*" What would you choose if you had the choice of Richmond or St. Francis?"
*"Why did Damion want to go to Richmond over St. Francis?"

After the thinking question discussion, we went over vocab. for the chapters we read:

*clenching: anger
*collective: a team together
*notorious: well known in a bad way
*straight: forward or to the point
*ruefully: to smile without being funny

Once that was done the final task to be done was to go over passages in the book and why we choose them:

*Passage 1: "Carter knew that St.Franicis did'nt need any help... but those Richmond players needed all the help they could get." It tells one of the reason why he also took the job.
*Passage 2: "I' ma come watch you get your asses kicked too" shows how Cruz thinks the team is going to do without him and under Carters coaching.
*Passage 3: "Young men the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step. Tonight we take that step...hands in..." This was reallty discribtive of Carter's philosphy.

Lit Circle 3

We had started out with the summary of chapters 5-8 and then discussed our thinking questions.
*Why did Cruz have to do all those suicides and push-ups?
*Why did the the team help Cruz do his suicides and push-ups?
*Why didn't Carter give Cruz any slack after making him do all that work?
*Why did the team want to win again?
*Would you keep the kid if you were Kenyon's girlfriend, even if it would ruin your boyfriends chance at college?

We had then started discussing passages from the book that we thought had a good meaning to the book.
* "You owe me...twenty-five hundred push-ups and one thousand suicides. And they must be completed by Friday."
* "Your assignment is impossible by Friday."
* "Keep your focus."

Then we discussed some of the vocab in the book that had meaning to deal with the chapters that we had read. And had these words picked out:
*rousing- giving rise to excitement
*leveling- equal in advantage
*inadiquit- in sufficent
*slain- to effect over powering
*interjected- to throw in between or among other things

We had then finished off with this thinking question:

I Am Third- I would probably try to stop him and tell him to continue because he has worked so hard to get to the team to this position. After all your hard work on getting your team to the best position this should make him proud, and want to be with your team until the end of the season. So why would you want to quit?!

I would tell him "Think of what you are doing!" You are telling us that even if you work hard to make your dreams come true that we should just quit before we get a chance to shine.
